A tamponless nose surgery is a procedure where no tampon is placed inside the nose after a nose aesthetic or surgery, and it is closed with dissolvable stitches.
In nose aesthetics, there are some points that patients fear. The unpredictability of the result, surprise outcomes, anesthesia, tampon, pain, bone fracture, bruising, and swelling. Although the natural and face-compatible result obtained is the most important issue, some fears inherent in human nature, which are not very meaningful, overshadow everything.
One of these is the fear of tampons. Stories of very long tampons used in times when aesthetic surgery was not very advanced, which caused pain when removed, seem to have become urban legends. Nowadays, within the concepts of modern nose aesthetics, we know that nose operations can be performed without using tampons. During nose aesthetics, the pinkish soft tissue inside the nose is separated from the cartilages it is attached to. The purpose of this is to see the cartilages more easily.
Sometimes this procedure is done to correct a deviated septum (the structure that divides and supports the nose into two cavities). If this soft tissue is not adhered back to its place after the procedure, spaces called dead spaces occur. Blood accumulating in these spaces causes uncontrolled swelling inside the nose. Sometimes it can result in permanent swelling. These permanent swellings can obstruct the airflow inside the nose. Therefore, dead spaces need to be adhered. The easiest way to do this is considered to be a tampon. The tampon, which applies pressure to this pink tissue, ensures adhesion within a few days. Although tampons bring convenience in this respect, traditional tampons can cause pain and bleeding when removed, and can also disrupt the corrected skeleton.
Moreover, during the time it is held, the person will have to breathe through the mouth, and alongside discomforts like throat and lip dryness, even eating will be difficult. Considering all these, tamponless nose aesthetics seems appealing. Some techniques performed by stitching the nose from the inside or using tissue adhesives make the tampon unnecessary for most people. The procedure performed is actually very simple. Neither does it show the surgeon's skill nor does it require special knowledge and training. Still, in about % 5 cases, using a tampon may be necessary. There are depths inside the nose that are difficult to close with stitches. In this case, non-adhesive balloon tampons or dissolvable tampons are good options. In other words, a tamponless nose surgery is possible for most people. Still, in some difficult and complex situations, using a tampon is inevitable.
As for the concept of painless and acheless nose surgery... After the patient falls asleep, an anesthetic mixture is applied to the nerves going to the nose. This mixture is based on the principles of numbing without giving a painful stimulus and ensuring the patient does not feel pain after waking up or reducing the need for painkillers. This procedure, called preemptive anesthesia, is quite effective. The mixture also contains vasoconstrictive substances and allows the procedure to be performed bloodlessly. The effect of this mixture is long-lasting. Therefore, after nose surgery, pain or ache is mostly not felt. Today, it has become a part of the technique for most aesthetic surgeons. It does not require special skill or training.
