Lip aesthetics and filling

By Prof. Dr Ahmet Karacalar

In lip aesthetics, besides lip thickness, the contour of the lip, the balance between the upper and lower lip, the corners of the mouth, the curvature angles of the lip edges, the distance between the lip and nose, the slope, lines, and angles of the upper lip region are important.

A beautiful lip not only adds attractiveness but also catches the eye and covers other issues of the person. If lip filler is done correctly, it makes a significant contribution to the harmony of the face.

The contour of the lip, the balance between the upper and lower lip (the upper lip should be 75% of the lower lip), the corners of the mouth, the curvature angles of the lip edges, the distance between the lip and nose, the slope, lines, and angles of the upper lip region, and the condition of the skin around the lips are important in lip aesthetics. Additionally, the structure, color, alignment, symmetry of the teeth, the condition of the gums, their visibility in smiling and normal posture, and the biting relationship between the lower and upper teeth directly affect lip aesthetics. The lip also has a dynamic aesthetic. Lips should be able to move, participate in expressions to a certain extent, be used comfortably during speech, and be soft and flexible. Considering all these, if the lip made is in harmony with the face, true lip aesthetics is achieved. Lip aesthetics should be considered as a part of facial aesthetics, not separate from it. The procedure should be performed by a plastic aesthetic surgery specialist who is fully knowledgeable about the subject. Instead of lip thickening, an ideal result can be achieved with a smile design approach.

Among temporary methods in lip augmentation procedures are physiological fillers, and among permanent methods are fat cell injection, tissue shifting procedures, or permanent implants and gels. The most natural, soft results are with fat cells rich in stem cells, and the method stands out for its easy repeatability if necessary. Physiological gels may be preferred due to their easy application, flexibility in shaping the lips, and being economical. Permanent substances are not among the first choices due to possible adverse outcomes like foreign body reaction and movement restriction. There are also auxiliary procedures like lip suspension, shortening the upper lip distance, and mouth corner lift. These contribute to the aesthetics of the mouth area.

If the lipstick you apply on your lips no longer looks as beautiful as before, it's time for Cupid's bow filler.

Lip

The red-white line framing the lip is known as the Cupid's bow. It is desired for this line to be prominent and firm. Since it leaves a very strong impact on the attractiveness of the face, it is named Cupid's bow inspired by the resemblance of the frame to a bow. This line loses its firmness and fades with aging and especially due to the decrease in estrogen levels. One of the most important reflections of this situation is that lipstick no longer looks as beautiful as before. This line can be quickly accentuated with HA gel fillers. After the procedure, it is possible to apply lipstick and continue with social life.

Although lip augmentation is done according to the artistic proportions of the lips, sometimes it can go beyond the ideal proportions. This is especially due to the lips of some celebrities who set trends. Wanting these lip structures can be an ease for the plastic surgeon. Easier patient-doctor communication is established.

The most requested lip structures are as follows…

Angelina Jolie style lips:  Prominent lip pout, overall fullness with the lower lip being more prominent
Liv Tyler style lips: Full lower lip + shaped upper lip
Jessica Alba style lips: Overall fullness in every part of the lips
Julie Roberts style lips: Upper lips more prominent

If the person's lip and facial structure is suitable, the desired lip structure can be achieved with hyaluronic acid gel or cell fillers. Sometimes adding botox is important for the design of lip muscles.
